Gilas Youth gain semis berth with 82-point win vs. Maldives

Gilas Pilipinas Youth advanced to the semifinals of the FIBA U18 Women’s Asian Championship 2022 Division B after a convincing 110-28 win over Maldives in India on Wednesday.

Louna Ozar led the Philippines with 22 points, on 11-of-15 shooting, three rebounds, and four steals. 

Ryhanna Calvert added 17 points and Kate Bobadilla also scored 17, on top of 11 rebounds and seven steals. Ashley Loon, meanwhile, had 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and seven steals.

The momentum Gilas Youth had from their first two wins carried over into the game against Maldives as the team went on a 21-6 blast in the first period. 

Gilas Youth built a lead as high as 85 points, thanks to their 53 percent field-goal percentage while limiting their opponents to 25 percent from the field and forcing them to 64 turnovers, which led to 67 points. 

The Philippines dominated Maldives in fast break points (46-6), second chance points (22-0), and points in the paint (66-2) to earn the convincing victory.

Gilas Youth swept their group to gain an outright berth in the semifinals, which will be held on Saturday.
