The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in conjunction with the Philippine Basketball Association announced on Sunday evening at the Smart Araneta Coliseum that they will be sending a team to the Asian Games, which starts on August 18 in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia.
The team that will represent the country will come from the core of the Rain or Shine team which will be reunited with their former head coach Yeng Guiao.
“We realized that there is a strong clamor from basketball fans, and since we are the house of basketball, we need to really look at that clamor. Galing ‘yan sa puso ng mga fans,” said Philippine Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas.
“The SBP is very happy to announce that we will compete in the Asian Games,” added SBP president Al Panlilio. “It was a very difficult and complex decision that we made, and it was unpopular. But with the clamor of the public, at the end of the day, para sa bayan ito.”
“We will make the announcements as to who we will add for the team in the next few days,” said Guaio. “We lost some time in preparing but luckily, the Rain or Shine team has been in traininmg.”
