SBP to appeal sanctions

MANILA, Philippines — Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive
director Renauld “Sonny’ Barrios bared last Friday, August 3, that the
federation will submit its appeal paper to Fiba’s appeals panel.

“The deadline for the submission of our appeal and letter of
clarification regarding the suspensions and sanctions is August 14,”
bared the longtime basketball executive who served a lengthy term with
the PBA before moving up to the SBP. “Our appeal will include video
footage and other matters.”

The Fiba appeals panel is led by Lars Hilliger who will serve as the
judge regarding the matter. FIBA will be represented by Andreas
Zagklis who is the legal director and general counsel of international
basketball’s governing body.

The details of the appeal will be confidential added Barrios.

The sanctions stemmed from the now infamous brawl that took place last
month at the Philippine Arena during the World Cup qualifying match
between Australia and Gilas.

Ten Gilas players were slapped with varying suspensions from the FIBA
World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Head coach Chot Reyes will sit out the
next away match against Iran and was slapped with a fine that adds up
to about P500,000. Assistant coach Jong Uichico was hit with a
three-match ban for his role in the fracas.

The SBP drew a disciplinary fine of about P13 million.
