Mapua’s 6’4” forward center Will Gozum will be taking his talents to the University of the Philippines come college.
It is actually a homecoming of sorts for the Concepcion, Tarlac native. Gozum played for UPIS in high school before transferring to Mapua. But now a return to Diliman is on the horizon. “As they say, home is where the heart is,” explained Gozum of his decision to move and not go up to the senior Cardinals in the NCAA.
Gozum because of his ability to hit outside shots as well as post up has been compared to former national team star Ranidel De Ocampo. “High praise yun,” said Gozum. “But Ranidel is one of the best in the game. Ako? I have a long way to go.”
In the same breath, Gozum said that his inspiration is another Gilas veteran in Marc Pingris. “Grabe yung hustle and heart niya. I try to play like Marc.”
After winning a NCAA Juniors crown for Mapua and making it to the finals for a second year in a row, Gozum was named by national team head coach Chot Reyes to the national team pool. “Hindi ko in-expect yan. Malaking karangalan makasama sa mga best PBA players at sa mga peers ko. Sana ma-fulfill ko potential and expectations nila.”
Gozum previously suited up for Batang Gilas alongside Gian Mamuyac and SJ Belangel to name a few players.
“I hope yung mga nagagawa ko sa basketball court ay makapag-inspire ng tao at ang mga taga-Tarlac.”
