Jaworski to Gilas” Play with purpose

Eight of the Philippines’ cage greats who all represented the country
in the Olympics graced a send-off affair for Gilas Pilipinas at the
Meralco Multi-Purpose Center in Pasig City.

Among the eight were Rafael Hechanova (1952 Helsinki), Tony Genato
(1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne), Edgardo Roque (1960 Rome), Arturo
Valenzona (1958 Mexico), Jimmy Mariano (1968 Mexico), Robert Jaworski
(1968 Mexico), Marte Samson (1972 Munich), and Manny Paner (1972

Jaworski, who is arguably the most popular Philippine cager ever,
dispensed with some advice for the nationals: “Play with a commitment
and a purpose,” said the man they call ‘the Big J.’ “If I had the
opportunity to go back, I will war that uniform again and represent
the country. The name on the back of your uniform is not as important
as the one in front. What you do in that uniform will be your legacy
to this country. So take advantage of the good fortune of hosting two
home games in a row where we can advance to the next round. Add you
names to the legacy arena.”
