Gilas Pilipinas Men sweep Thailand in Asia Cup Qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas Men came out on top of Group A after the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers second window concluded in Manama, Bahrain.

The men’s national basketball team beat Thailand twice to stay perfect in the competition with a 3-0 record.

Gilas Pilipinas posted a 93-61 win over the Thais on Friday (November 27) behind Dwight Ramos, who steered the team with 20 points. The national squad then capped the second window on Monday (November 30) by defeating Thailand again, 93-69. Javi and Juan Gomez de Liaño led the charge and combined for 33 points in the win.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio was elated by the performance of the young Gilas squad in Bahrain.

“Congratulations for a job well done to Gilas Pilipinas Men’s Team Program Director Tab Baldwin, head coach Jong Uichico, all the assistant coaches and staff, and the 15 young men who represented our country in Manama, Bahrain,” Panlilio said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Even with the challenges the situation presented, you gave no excuses and gave us two performances that the entire country is proud of. Having young players come together at such a short time and still perform tremendously gives me so much excitement for what the future holds for Philippine basketball.”

“You played great team basketball , with sportsmanship, and with poise beyond your years as you showed the best that Philippine basketball has to offer. We’re so proud of you.”
