MANILA – The Philippines’ naturalized center, Andray Blatche is
looking to give a better account of himself when Gilas resumes its
quest to advance to the next round of the Asian Qualifiers.
“I’m in better shape,” said Blatche who came under criticism for a
sub-par outing during a closely fought 90-83 win over Chinese Taipei
last November 27, 2017 at the Smart Araneta Colisuem. Blatche finished
with a paltry 6 points although he did grab 14 rebounds.
Including the away 77-71 win against Japan last November 24, 2017,
Blatche has posted an average of 9.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4. 0
assists, 2.0 steals and 4.0 blocks per game.
The Philippines will need Blatche’s strength, power, and scoring savvy
when they take on Australia at the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne
this coming February 22.
“It’s gonna be a difficult game for us,” noted the 6’11” center who
most recently suited up for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in the Chinese
Basketball Association. “We have to play hard, use our speed, outside
shooting, and, hopefully, everything turns out in our favor. We got to
work hard as a team – use our strengths and our quickness, and I feel
like we have a very good chance.”
