Baser Amer finally achieved a long cherished dream to make it to the senior national team. With Kiefer Ravena unavailable, the Meralco point guard was called up to national team duty by Gilas head coach Chot Reyes.
On the eve of the rematch versus Australia, Reyes explained the decision to include Amer as well as Carl Bryan Cruz in the line-up.
First of all, we needed Jio (Jalalon) and Allein (Maliksi) for Chinese Taipei,” said the long time national head coach. “We needed Jio to hound the pesky Chinese guards and we needed Allein to be an extra zone buster because we expected Chinese Taipei to play a lot of zone. That was their role.”
“Now for Australia, we need more size. And that’s Baser who gives us more height at the guard position. And we need a bigger shooter that is why Carl Bryan Cruz is in the lineup.”
Amer while happy about the call-up tried his best not to show his giddiness over the appointment. “Okay naman,” he said with his usual deadpan look. “Hindi puwede sobrang excited baka maging gigil sa laro. Happy ako for the opportunity pero kailangan ipakita na deserving tayo. Gawin ko best ko bukas.”
